It's Time To Get Creative With These Random DIYs

I've thrown myself feet-first into learning bookbinding, and while I'm having a blast — and now have more sketchbooks than I can ever use — my inner Do-It-Yourselfer wants to get its craft on.

Of course, I don't want to start some crazy, giant project, so I looked for inspiration amongst the kind of projects one can do in a weekend.

1. DIY Woven Pom-Pom Tassel Pillow

The Things She Makes | The Things She Makes

There is no such thing as too many pillows. The three I have smooshed behind me right now prove it. Decorative pillows are stupidly expensive, though, so I like to make my own instead.

This embellished one from The Things She Makes looks super cozy.

You could make the pillow yourself, but she actually found a plain pillow with a loose knitted fabric that was perfect for adding her own embellishments with simple yarn embroidery and some cute pom-poms.

2. DIY Patterned Shoes

By Wilma | By Wilma

Did you know that you can use Mod Podge on your shoes? You can! I just discovered how to do it with this tutorial from By Wilma. Suddenly, I have a way to update all those boring old shoes in my closet!

You know the ones. They're still in too good of a shape to merit tossing, but you never wear them.

My favorite part of this technique is the clever use of tape to make a pattern for cutting the fabric to the shape of the shoes. Totally going to make time for this!

3. DIY Large-Scale "Frameless" Art Or Photos

Mr. Kate | Mr. Kate

Is it just me, or does it feel weird to just tape a poster or print on the wall when you're an adult? It's like you leave college and suddenly it feels juvenile to hang something that isn't framed.

But for some items, you kind of want to preserve the frameless look, right?

Plus, framing large-scale stuff is expensive. That's why I adore this idea from Mr. Kate, which sandwiches the art between two layers of clear acrylic. So chic!

4. DIY Woven Leather Stool

Francois Et Moi | Francois Et Moi

This stool DIY from Francois Et Moi is really speaking to me. I think I may have the perfect spot in my home for one just like it.

I've seen stools with woven leather tops before, but something about the chunkiness of this one speaks to me.

The key is to wrap the leather around jumbo piping from the fabric store and then weave it.

5. DIY Anthropologie-Inspired Gold Leaf Coasters

Sarah Hearts | Sarah Hearts

Oh, Anthropologie, how we love your products and hate your prices so much. Luckily, that makes you the perfect inspiration for some DIY projects.

Check out these glam coasters from Sarah Hearts!

They used resin and gold leaf flakes with a bit of paint on the bottom to provide visual depth. I'm inexperienced with resin crafts, but I think this would be a great project to try.

6. DIY Rustic Accent Wall

Modish And Main | Modish And Main

Accent walls continue to be trendy, which makes sense because they allow you to bring some boldness to a space without committing to a whole room.

Modish and Main made it an even smaller commitment by only accenting one section of a bathroom.

It's like an accent backsplash! I love the idea of bringing some warm wooden accents into a bathroom, which is a room that often feels very cold.

7. DIY Jewelry Box

Homey Oh My | Homey Oh My

I have a jewelry box, but I actually find it too big for my needs. It seems silly to buy something else to replace it, though, so maybe the thing to do is make a small box to hold my most commonly worn pieces.

Homey Oh My proves that it's easy to turn any plain box into a home for jewelry.

You just need some cotton batting and felt — or velvet, if you want to be super luxe.

8. DIY Paper Stripe Tray

Say Yes | Say Yes

I have an entire drawer dedicated to scraps of leftover paper, cardstock, and fabric that I've convinced myself I'll someday use. So, this colorful serving tray totally speaks to me.

The tutorial from Say Yes uses just colorful cardstock strips and basic white glue.

I love the stripes, but even if I can't dig out enough scraps to get perfect stripes, I'm sure I can come up with a patchwork look that's really cute.

9. DIY Plaster And Washi Tape Pushpins

The Crafted Life | The Crafted Life

Look at how cute these pushpins from The Crafted Life are! Admittedly, I'm kind of in love with the little honeycomb tray she used to make them.

With just some Plaster of Paris, you can totally transform those boring pushpins you bought at the dollar store.

The washi tape adds color in an easy way. You don't even need to get out a paintbrush!

10. DIY Woven Storage Basket

Personalizing store-bought basics is a great way to bring the things you love into your home and show off your individual style without needing to learn a whole new skill.

A Kailo Chic Life used a bunch of wool to customize a basic faux-woven basket from the store.

By braiding and tying the yarn in different ways, she got a mix of different textures and a ton of personality.

11. DIY Chalkboard Plaques

Oh The Sweet Things | Oh The Sweet Things

Last time I was at the dollar store, I stood in front of the basic wooden plaques piled in the craft aisle and tried to think of something I could make with them.

I'm going to have to go back, because I love these little chalkboards from Oh The Sweet Things!

They're super cute and useful in all sorts of places around the house.

12. DIY Cement And Wood Doorstop

Mother Daughter Projects | Mother Daughter Projects

Who says that you need to use a boring wedge to hold open a door?

...Or a mangled shoe missing its mate after a run-in with a teething puppy, which is how I've been propping open the kitchen door for six years.

After finding this idea from Mother Daughter Projects, I definitely need to upgrade from that old shoe.

My favorite part of this tutorial is the clever use of Lego bricks to make the cement mold. It's kind of genius.
