The upcoming Netflix film The Laundromat has a star-studded cast including Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, and Antonio Banderas, and has been eagerly anticipated by many fans of these actors.
It's commonly been joked that Meryl Streep is such a dynamic actress she could play any role, but this time, people think she was offensively miscast.
Though the movie isn't out yet, some reviewers have been able to see it early, and are reporting that Meryl shows up halfway through as a second character, this one a Latina woman, with her skin darkened, a fake nose, a black wig, hip padding, and an exagerrated Latin accent.
Some fans are calling Streep's role as a Latina woman "brownface" and are saying there should have been an effort made to find a Latina actress for the part.
As this Twitter user continued to say, "Great to see every single question at the Q&A be about how great Meryl Streep is as a person (she is) yet nothing on her playing a Latina character including a nose prosthetic."
Some are saying that the judgement is made too hastily as the movie in question and the costume Streep wears have not been seen by the general public.
