Twitter Tells Man To 'Run' After He's Asked To Turn On Read Receipts On First Date

The things you hear about dating in 2019 is enough to make you feel grateful to be in committed, long-term relationship and to have left that scene well in your rearview mirror.

Folks, if you're still single and putting yourself out there, well, my hat is off to you, and I wish you all the luck in the world, because you'll need it.

I mean it: good luck.

Listen, dating etiquette has never been easy to navigate, but as one guy found out, sometimes a mishap in etiquette is also a sign to steer clear.

A Twitter user going by the handle @EricD14 shared an awkward exchange after a first date that left his followers reeling.

Apparently he had been out on a first date and, afterwards, he was worried about being ghosted.

Ghosting may have been preferable to what actually happened.

Turns out he didn't have to worry about that as much as the exact opposite after his date asked him to turn on read receipts, even giving him the instructions on how to do so.

Obviously Eric was not on board with letting his new date keep track of when he's read his texts.

It's kind of a red flag, you know?

And Eric's Twitter family wholeheartedly agreed that read receipts were a bridge too far and a first date was much too early for such a commitment.

"This is horror film dating," wrote one person.

"You thought you were in a ghost story and instead it was true crime," wrote another.

As many pointed out, people who need to see those read receipts, especially after a first date, might be signalling some troubling behavior.

If they're that controlling after one date, what would they be like once things get more serious?

So Eric might have dodged a bullet big time here.

"This is the part of the crime documentary where the steely narrator intones something very ominous, and we cut to commercial," wrote another.

It also turned out that Eric's exchange helped out a few other people.

Some who didn't know what read receipts were got a lesson in what to watch out for.

And then there were those who got a little confirmation that their own lives weren't complete disasters.

"Once again ok with my decision to stop dating and become a cat lady," wrote one person.

Oh, and just for the record, Eric did indeed ditch his controlling date.

He called it his "weirdest post first date request," and it's hard to argue with that.

But hey, if life is going to fly those red flags so high and prominently, it only makes sense to heed them!

Would you turn on read receipts for someone after a first date?
