Traditionally White Characters Going To Black Actors Is Actually A Good Thing

Lately, in Hollywood, there have been a number of “traditionally white roles” being given to black actors.

And because of that, there are a number of people who have lashed out because of these castings.

Recently, it has to do with Lashana Lynch becoming 007 and Halle Bailey becoming our new Princess Ariel in 'The Little Mermaid'.

But here’s the thing: it actually doesn’t matter that they’re black. It’s a good thing!

It allows for our new generation to get what an older one didn’t: people that look like them, telling stories, kicking butt, and going through some major life changes.

We know what you’re wondering:

But if this is okay, why can’t a white person play Mulan? Or Princess Tiana? Or any other POC character?

The answer is quite simple actually!

Let's use 'Mulan' as an example.

Disney

The entire movie and character, revolve around Mulan’s Chinese heritage and cultural standing.

Putting a white character in place of a Chinese one would erase a legend, and would completely take apart the culture.

Not only that, but there are so little famously told POC stories, that taking one away from them is simply in bad (and racist) taste.

So why isn’t it the same for 'The Little Mermaid'? For a bunch of reasons!

Mermaids don’t have culture, the story doesn’t revolve around culture, and the original Little Mermaid had green skin.

So they had already changed her skin color with the Disney version, so clearly, tradition never mattered.

Oh, and she’s a mythical sea creature.
