Boxing Legend Pernell Whitaker Dead At 55 After Hit By Car

Famous boxer Pernell Whitaker passed away Sunday night at the age of 55-years-old, after succumbing to injuries sustained after being hit by a car in Virginia Beach.

Officials responded to a call regarding an accident at the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road at around 10 pm that night, and when they arrived, they found Whitaker in "bad shape" after being struck by the vehicle.

Emergency services attempted to perform CPR in order to resuscitate Whitaker, but he ultimately lost his life.

At his prime, Whitaker won four different world titles in four different weight categories.

From 1984 through to 2001, he fought with an impressive 40-4-1 record, including 17 knockouts.

After winning a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics in L.A, he was named Ring Magazine's 1989 Fighter of the Year and considered to be the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Authorities on the scene of the accident want to make it clear to the public that this was not a hit and run.

Though the driver has yet to be identified, they allegedly stayed on the scene and spoke to police and emergency services.

Whitaker will be missed by family, fellow fighters, and fans alike.
