I never used to understand the appeal of bagels, and then I went to a proper bagel shop and discovered that when done right, they are incredible.
I've joined the crowd of commuters making that morning stop for caffeine and carbohydrates before work. Mostly, that crowd has the glassy-eyed, pre-coffee look as they stare down at their phones to see what kind of crazy the day has in store for them.
Since this is the age of smartphones and social media, the entire incident involving a customer of shorter stature was recorded and posted to Twitter.
He's particularly focused on how women treat men who aren't tall.
"Why is it OK for women to say, 'Oh you’re 5 feet' on dating sites — you should be dead. That’s OK?"
The manager, Patty, told The New York Post that the rant seemed to be triggered when the female employee that was serving him smiled at him.
In response, he began being rude to the employee.
She wasn't sure what was going to happen, but wanted video in case it got violent. Which it sort of did.
The angry man moves right in close, demanding to know if the other guy wants to take it outside.
"Shut your mouth. You are not God or my father or my boss. Dude, do you want to step outside?"
No one appears to be hurt and you can hear the tackler telling the guy to calm down and that he can't just treat women that way.
As for the tackler, the manager says that he's their hero. "If he didn’t tackle him, it would’ve gone on and on," she said.
It also raised a debate about how much hate the angry man should receive for the outburst.
The rant feels like the result of a lot of pent-up anger and it's likely that he's dealt with years of bullying due to his height. Still, the female employees of a bagel shop shouldn't be the victims of his outburst, especially when it's part of their job to smile at customers.
After most of the other customers had cleared out — including, it appears, the man in blue — the manager tries to tell the angry customer to take his food and go. He throws down his food and begins to storm out, but one of the employees lets a laugh escape.
Thankfully, after only a few more choice words, he grabs his bagel again and storms out.
The police were called, but there were no injuries and no charges filed.
