Man Stunned To Discover Bug That 'Looks Like An Alien' In His House

mason.zimmer 5 Jul 2019

This may be too far back for some of us to remember, but there was a time when the prospect of finding a strange insect in the house almost seemed like an emergency.

Naturally, this varied depending on what kind of kid you were, but those who didn't like bugs definitely treated this unexpected guests as intruders.

Although many of us are a lot more used to this part of life now, that doesn't mean it's impossible for a particularly strange bug to bring this old, panicked reaction back.

And for a lot of people, one bizarre moth might do the trick.

Bali, Indonesia is a breathtaking paradise for many travels, but it's simply home to Hari Toae.

And on one particularly rainy night before he was expecting some guests, he found that Bali was home to more colorful characters than he realized.

Scurrying across his ceiling was a moth with four hairy tentacles that he had never seen the likes of before.

According to The Daily Mail, it seemed to be moving upside down with its legs gripping the ceiling.

Toae was stumped as to what the the insect could be, but said that it "looked like an alien."

I mean, he's not wrong about it looking out of this world.

I mean, we're used to moths, you know, not having tentacles.

He figured that it hadn't come from around his neighborhood, but bugs of its kind may come a little closer to home than one might assume.

That's because the creature he found may be related to the Creatonotos gangis, a species of moth native to Southeast Asia and parts of Australia.

As Newsweek reported, the moths are known to sprout these tentacles–which are actually scent glands–during mating season.

Yes, that crazy moth was looking for love in Toae's home.

As they inflate, these glands release a pheromone intended to attract female moths.

For some reason, I find the word "inflate" upsetting in that description.

The hairs on these glands are also an important part of the process, as they help waft the smell towards potential mates.

When these moths were caterpillars they grew these glands by eating plants with toxic alkaloid chemicals.

Those toxins also ensure that the moths taste terrible, just in case anyone was curious about eating them.

However, as long as that thought doesn't cross your mind, the moths are harmless and actually look fairly normal when mating season isn't happening.

Indeed, Toae didn't seem too alarmed by the moth either and figured it was just trying to take shelter from the rain.

As he said, "I will let it stay in my house, but only for the night. I don't want it to scare my guests away."
