Horse Cries Out And Lays Head On Casket At Owner's Funeral

As sad as it is to think about, many people will know what it feels like to lose a pet. Whether we're talking about a faithful dog, a precious cat or even a majestic horse, it's very unlikely that our animal companions will outlive us due to the difference in lifespans.

It may be possible with certain types of parrots or tortoises, but there's a reason why this loss seems like a universal experience.

However, sometimes the world unfolds differently and people are survived by their animals. And if one horses behavior is of any indication, there's a chance that they'll miss us as much as we do them.

For almost a decade, 34-year-old Wagner de Lima Figueiredo worked closely with his beloved horse, Sereno.

As his brother said, "He had a passion and a great love for him. Sometimes he would even stop buying things for himself to make sure he could afford to buy horse feed."

And in that time, Figueiredo and Sereno had seen many a rodeo together.

Figueiredo worked as a semi-professional cowboy in Brazil, which also left a lot for Sereno to do during that hard, exciting work.

Sadly, it all came to a sudden end when Figueiredo died in a motorcycle accident on New Year's Day.

A week later, his funeral was held in Cajazeiras, Brazil and as his friends and family might expect, Sereno was in attendance.

After he caught sight of Figueiredo's casket, Sereno started crying out in a series of sad whinnies.

As one of the cowboy's close friends, Francielio Limiera, said, "As we brought the coffin out at the beginning of the funeral, he sounded like he was crying and as if he recognized that his owner was finally leaving him. He pounded the ground with his hooves and kept on whinnying. It was very sad."

Limiera said that he wouldn't have believed Sereno's response to the loss if he hadn't seen it himself.

As USA Today reported, this feeling was echoed by others in attendance when Sereno laid his head on Figueiredo's casket.

Although Sereno clearly seemed haunted by the death of his friend and rider, he will remain cared for.

Figueiredo's brother has agreed to take on that responsibility as a way of honoring his memory.
