Viral pics are great and all, and they're all over the internet for a while. Everybody needs to see what the latest amazing thing was. But just as quickly as they appear, they're gone, replaced by the next one.

These pics have a bit more staying power behind them. They might go viral, but they're not just a flash in the pan. They leave a lasting impression.

1. The guy on the ground is blind. Moments earlier, he was on the tracks in this subway station, having lost his way.

The guys standing around him heard him cry out for help, and one of them jumped down without a second thought to get him out. Together, they got the man to safety.

2. After class, this math professor sets up shop on a public bench with a sign, offering free math lessons to anyone who wants to learn.

20. Astronomers using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope caught a pic of something we've never seen before: a planet being born.
