Baby Monitor Catches Burglar Prowling Infant's Room

For many of us, our homes are the places that comfort us most in the world. Now matter how cold or scary the world might feel on certain days, there's something peaceful about returning to the warm safety of our beds after a rough day.

That's likely one of the reasons why so many horror movies see incomprehensible monsters or ruthless intruders invade a cozy intimate house, but for parents, there's one scenario that's even scarier than this breach of security.

And one New York couple had a brush with this fear when a stranger came into their baby's room.

At about 8:10 p.m. on Friday, an unidentified man climbed through the window of a sixth-floor Bronx apartment.

According to the New York Post, he managed this by climbing up the fire escape and slipping through the open window.

As soon as he did this, the tenant's baby monitor started recording his actions.

The New York Police Department has since released the footage on their NYPD Crimestoppers Facebook page in the hopes of finding the intruder.

As the baby apparently sleeps, the burglar can be seen wandering around their room.

At first, he's careful not to make much noise as he slowly creeps around. He also doesn't touch anything at this point in the recording.

Eventually, he appears more confident that nobody besides the baby is in the room with him and paces around faster.

He passes the crib multiple times, but doesn't show any apparent interest in either the baby or anything in their room.

At one point, the burglar seems to look directly into the baby monitor's lens.

However, it's unclear whether he actually recognizes it as a camera since he makes no attempt to take or destroy it.

If he was confused as to what he was looking at, that may explain his next action.

Towards the end of the recording, the prowler actually turns on a light in the room.

However, he almost immediately turns it off and rushes for the window he came in through.

According to the New York Post, this was because he had heard the child's father speaking.

Although this close call appeared to spook the burglar, he was more daring than he seemed.

Police said that he climbed into another window soon after, whereupon he stole two watches, six necklaces, two bracelets, a backpack, and a bicycle.

Together, these items were worth about $1,200.

Police believe this burglar has been caught on camera before.

They said that on January 15, another person that resembles the man in the video scaled another apartment building and ended up stealing $7,000 worth of electronics and watches.

That time, he was spotted by a security camera, but he also apparently took a moment to look at it as he may have done with the baby monitor.

Here is the video for you to watch yourself.

The original video of the burglar, who remains at large, can be found here.
