Low-Carb Cauliflower Tortillas Are On Their Way To Stores Soon

Once upon a time, going on a diet seemed to mean kissing a lot of the foods we love goodbye. Sticking to one is enough of a challenge nowadays, but it's hard not to imagine people staring into restaurant windows with puppy dog eyes before things got a little easier.

Yet, things have indeed become a little easier. Regardless of what diet people are trying to achieve, new products come out all the time to bridge the gap between what we're supposed to eat and what we want to eat.

That means the cauliflower tortillas we're looking at today are probably the answer to somebody's prayers.

The wraps are made by a company called Caulipower, which is mostly known for making cauliflower-based pizza crusts.

According to Delish, they later expanded their gluten-free, low-carb reach to baking mixes and frozen pizzas.

Now, they're diving into the tortilla market, so let's see what they've got for us.

Like their other products, these cauliflower tortillas are gluten-free and they're also vegan.

As it says on their website, two of the wraps add up to 120 calories with one gram of fat, with three grams of protein.

Although they're made with cauliflower, they also contain some corn flour you see in regular tortillas, which is likely why they have 25 grams of carbs.

However, the company also makes a grain-free version of this product.

This kind replaces the corn flour with chickpea and cassava flour, as well as pea protein and coconut oil.

This version adds up to 140 calories for every two tortillas, with four grams of fat and 19 grams of carbohydrates.

Both contain the same amount of fiber, though (three grams).

If you're already making plans for these wraps, I'm afraid those plans will have to stay on hold for a little while longer.

According to a post on Caulipower's Instagram, the tortillas won't be available in stores until February.

But not to worry if you don't see them pop up in your area. According to Delish, they'll also be available on Amazon by then.

Some of you may have noticed something odd in the breakdown of what makes up these tortillas.

For a product that we're bandying about as low-carb, they seem to have a decent amount of carbs in them, right?

Some other products go as low as one gram of carbs, so what gives?

What gives is that there are different types of carbs and some are a lot more helpful to the body than others.

As Harvard Health reported, we can tell the difference between them based on how quickly they turn into glucose and raise our blood sugar.

Foods like broccoli, apples, whole-grain pasta–and yes, cauliflower–all go through this process slowly.

As Harvard Health said, this is important for weight and diabetes control, but is also a good sign that the food we're dealing with contains helpful fiber.

Caulipower's product definitely fits that bill.

The trouble starts when we deal with foods that race to the blood stream.

These are called refined carbohydrates and white rice and white pasta are notable examples of them. They're also known to have a lot of their nutrients removed, including fiber.

Basically, the cauliflower tortillas may have some carbs, but they have ones you can actually use.
