Barack Obama Warms Hearts With Surprise Children's Hospital Visit

As magical as the holidays can feel for a lot of kids, life can make it harder for some of them to get into the Christmas spirit. While it's comforting to be around a loving family no matter where you are, a kid in the hospital probably isn't spending the holidays in their favorite place.

At a time and place like that, a pleasant surprise is greatly appreciated. And one Washington D.C. hospital got exactly that this year.

Patients at the Children's National Health System never suspected a thing before they received a big surprise.

And that surprise was former president Barack Obama strolling in with a sack of presents over his shoulder.

As The Guardian reported, he told the kids that his reindeer were "stuck in some snow," but he wanted to make sure he visited.

And it didn't take long for the mood in the hospital to turn festive.

A Twitter video from the hospital shows him leading an excited crowd of staff and patients in singing "We Wish You A Merry Christmas."

In a cheeky reply to the tweet, Obama said, "Thanks for humoring me as your stand-in Santa."

But "humoring him" seemed to be the last way that the kids he visited would describe their meeting.

Indeed, one girl was clearly overwhelmed by the surprise and burst into joyful tears as Obama leaned over her hospital bed for a hug.

In addition to visiting patients in their rooms, he also toured several of the hospital's playrooms.

Wherever he went, he gave out gifts and friendly chats in equal measure. Their stand-in Santa may not have had Santa's red suit or giant beard, but he was certainly fitting the job description.

Obama also took a moment to address the important role the hospital staff have in this time of year.

As he said in the video, “You have the nurses, and staff and doctors and people who are caring for them and looking after them and just there for them, listening to them and holding their hands. That’s the most important thing there is, a great reminder of what the holiday spirit is supposed to be about,”
