Mattel Considers Same-Sex Barbie Set After Couple Makes One Themselves

They always say that if you want something done, you have to do it yourself. Sooner or later, there's a pretty good chance that you'll have a need that nobody's manufactured a product for.

And eventually, that search can get so frustrating that it legitimately seems easier just to make what you're looking for on your own. And when you see how many DIY projects and tech mods people have come up with, it becomes clear how common that feeling really is.

Yet, when one couple made a birthday gift that they couldn't find, they didn't just take care of themselves. In fact, they may be on the road to making things easier for many more people.

Matt Jacobi and Nick Caprio are set to get married next May.

According to ABC News, they've been together for 12 years and managed to make it work through the lonely early days when they were in a long-distance relationship.

Matt said that everyone in his family is very excited for the big day.

As he told Good Morning America, "We have a wonderful, loving and caring Italian family."

But if anybody can claim the excitement crown, it's Matt's eight-year-old niece, Natalie, and her younger sister.

Both will be flower girls for the ceremony, so Matt knew he had to do something special when Natalie's birthday came up.

Matt prides himself on being a good uncle – or #Guncle, as he puts it – and he knew she loves Barbies, so he set out to find something that was related to the wedding and enjoyable to her all at once.

Although he found something that was very close to what he needed, it wasn't close enough.

What he found had a cake and two young flower girls that were decent matches for his nieces' ages. However, the wedding set could only come with a bride and a groom.

So Matt and Nick put their heads together and made a little adjustment to the wedding set.

Yup, one quick Barbie substitution later and they had made the perfect gift for Matt's nieces. And the dolls even had different tuxes to wear, which was a nice touch.

However, the biggest part of this story might just be beginning.

Apparently, tagging Mattel in Matt's Instagram post was a good move because the company reached out to the couple to set up a meeting.

According to Matt, they're set to meet the head of Barbie design, the design team itself, and the marketing department to discuss the possibility of turning their DIY gift into an official Mattel product. Talk about a productive shopping trip!
