Kirk Douglas Has Died At 103

Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas and father to Michael Douglas, has died.

Kirk made the transition from Broadway to film in the late '40s, where he earned his first Oscar nomination for "Champion."

He became known for starring in several westerns, including Along the Great Divide.

He became best known for his role in "Spartacus," in which he was also the executive producer.

Kirk was nominated for a total of three Academy Awards over the course of his career.

In 1996 he suffered a stroke, but following his rehabilitation, he made a return to the spotlight after writing his book, "My Stroke of Luck."

His other books include "The Ragman's Son," "Climbing the Mountain: My Search for Meaning" and one he wrote at 90-year-old, "Let's Face It: 90 Years of Loving, Living and Learning."

One of his final public appearances was at the 2018 Golden Globes, which he attended with his daughter-in-law, Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Kirk's son, Michael, shared the news of his death on Instagram.

"It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103," he wrote in an emotional post.

"To the world he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to."

"But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband."

"Kirk's life was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet."

Kirk is survived by his wife Anne Douglas, whom he married in 1954, three sons and several grandchildren.
