The phrase "blood is thicker than water" is too often used to condone toxic relationships within families. People tend to put up with a lot more mistreatment, and worse, from others simply because they are related to them. This is an unfortunate reality for many, who feel obligated to keep ties with family simply because they're "supposed to."

Grandpa Writes Powerful Letter Disowning Daughter After She Kicked Out Her Gay Son
However, sometimes things happen that cause rifts between family regardless.

After a mother threw her son out of their house simply because he came out to her as gay, she received a particularly scathing letter from her own father who condemned her intolerance and effectively disowned her.

The letter has the internet collectively applauding this grandpa for standing up for his grandson, even if that means telling his own daughter that she is a "heartless B-word."
The letter, which had been previously posted online by the teenage son named Chad, was addressed to his mom Christine.

"Dear Christine," it begins, "I'm disappointed in you as a daughter."
The unnamed grandfather continues, "You're correct that we have a 'shame in the family', but mistaken about what it is."
"Kicking Chad out of your home simply because he told you he was gay is the real 'abomination' here."

"A parent disowning her child is what goes 'against nature,'" the letter continues.
He does have a point here. What is the greater evil: someone loving who they want to love, or their parent punishing them for it?
The grandpa goes on to insist that Chad was "born this way and didn't choose [to be gay] any more than being left-handed."

"You, however, have made the choice of being hurtful, narrow-minded, and backward," he wrote.
"So, while we are in the business of disowning our children, I think I'll take this moment to say goodbye to you. I now have a fabulous (as the gay put it) grandson to raise, and I don't have time for heartless B-word of a daughter."
The grandfather then finishes the letter by writing, "If you find your heart, give us a call."

As difficult as it probably was to pen the poignant letter, the grandpa certainly got his point across and hopefully helped Christine see just how unreasonable she was being towards her own son.
According to the Irish Post, Chad is now happily living with his grandfather who has generously offered him a loving and caring home, something which his own daughter refused the teen.
Since the letter went viral, people online have praised the grandpa for sticking up for his grandson, and for holding a mirror up to his daughter's face.
"I hope I never have to do anything like this to anyone in my family," this Reddit user wrote. "But I also hope that if the situation ever arose I could be half as badass as grandpa here."
Another added, "It takes some serious stones to throw away years of parenting to step up and do it all again for your own grandkid! Badass grandpa indeed!"
Then there were those who noticed that this grandpa didn't leave Christine without hope of an eventual reunion, should her attitude change.
As this user wrote, "I love this grandpa, and I love that he left a window open for his daughter if she figures out what a B-word she's been."
While he did write that he is disowning her, this grandpa has offered Christine the chance to get back in his good graces.

All she has to do is understand just how poorly she's handled the entire situation, and realize that her son deserves much more than an intolerant mother.
