Caterpillar's Unique Markings Look Like A Bunch Of Dancing Penguins

I've never really thought of caterpillars as cute. Interesting? Sure. But cute? Um, not so much.

I'm just not a fan of the creepy and the crawly, no matter how fuzzy and seemingly innocent they are. So when I heard about an "adorable" caterpillar, I just had to take a look for myself.

Suffice it to say, I was not disappointed.

The tent caterpillar has some pretty unique markings that make it look like it's *always* wearing a penguin sweater.

No, seriously. Take a really close look at that picture and you'll see some adorable, tuxedo'd penguins doing a lil' dance on that caterpillar's back.

Who needs to buy Christmas sweaters when you permanently have the perfect one on your body?

These 2-inch caterpillars can be find in big groups all across North America in an effort to ward off predators.

As The Dodo reported, their name comes from their affinity for spinning webbed "tents" of silk in tree branches and bark, which is also where they like to hang out all day. So they kind of make their own little hammocks.

During the evening, these guys forage for food and snack on some tasty leaves.

Once their bellies are nice and full, they find a satisfactory leaf to curl up inside and spin a cocoon. Then, they'll emerge as a beautiful butterfly!

Or, well, actually more like a fluffy moth. But they can still fly! So that's pretty cool.

Sadly, the moth stage means the end of the penguin sweater stage, so I'm sure it's a bittersweet experience once they've earned their wings.
