Michelle Obama Defended Ellen DeGeneres’ Friendship With George W. Bush

Back in October, Ellen Degeneres and George W. Bush sat next to each other at an NFL game, and the internet seemed less than thrilled about their unlikely friendship.

Within days, Ellen was forced to confront the criticism and defend herself with a monologue on her show, which was applauded by several other celebs. Now, Michelle Obama is stepping forward to defend Ellen's friendship with George Bush as well.

In October, Ellen Degeneres and her wife were spotted sitting next to former President George W. Bush and his life at a Dallas Cowboys vs. Greenbay Packers football game.

Not only were they seated next to each other, however, they also seemed surprisingly friendly.

For obvious reasons, this was not a sight anyone expected to see.

While they are an odd pairing of friends due to political differences, it actually made fans angry to see them together.

The backlash from fans did not go unnoticed, and it didn't take long for Ellen to address the complaints on her show.

"So, I want to talk about something that happened this weekend," she began. "This weekend I went to Dallas for the Cowboys game".

"It may not seem like a big deal for a celebrity to attend a football game — but uh — I never leave my house, so, it is a big deal," she joked, hoping to soften the blow.

"Portia and I were invited by Charlotte Jones. She is the daughter of Jerry Jones, who owns the Dallas Cowboys."

"We get to sit in this very fancy suite, 'cause you know, he owns the whole place. His suite is fancy and he's got fancy friends."

"I took a video of who was next to me," she said before playing a clip of George Bush smiling in the seat next to her.

"When we were invited, I was aware that I was going to be surrounded by people with very different views and beliefs."

"During the game, they showed a shot of George and me laughing together, and uh — people were upset."

"They thought 'Why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative republican president?'"

"[They] didn't even notice I'm holding the brand new iPhone 11," she joked. "But a lot of people were mad, and they did what people do when they're mad — they tweet."

"Here's the thing," she went on. "I'm friends with George Bush. In fact, I'm friends with a lot of people who don't share the same beliefs that I have."

"We're all different and I think that we've forgotten that that's okay — that we're all different."

"Just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them," she concluded.

Several celebrities, such as Reese Witherspoon and Kristen Bell, sided with Ellen and applauded her for choosing kindness over hatred. But the criticism from fans continued to pour in.

The backlash hasn't let up.

Actor, Mark Ruffalo, actually called out Ellen and her supporters via Twitter.

“Sorry, until George W. Bush is brought to justice for the crimes of the Iraq War, (including American-lead torture, Iraqi deaths & displacement, and the deep scars-emotional & otherwise-inflicted on our military that served his folly), we can’t even begin to talk about kindness,” he wrote.

However, Michelle Obama has recently chimed in to defend Ellen on the "Today" show, being interviewed by George Bush's daughter, Jenna Bush Hager.

She began by bringing up her own friendship with the former president.

“I had the opportunity to sit by your father at funerals," she revealed.

"The highs and the lows and we shared stories about our kids and about our parents."

"Our values are the same,” she stated.

“We disagreed on policy, but we don’t disagree on humanity. We don’t disagree about love and compassion."

She explained that in many ways, everyone can be consumed by the fear of change, or things they're unfamiliar with.

"I think that’s true for all of us, it’s just that we get lost in our fear of what’s different.”
