Nicki Minaj Gave A Pretty Awkward Answer To Explain Her Met Gala Outfit

Singers, actors, models and more all showed out at the 2019 Met Gala in their most over-the-top outfits last night.

Which makes sense seeing as the theme for the night was Camp: Notes on Fashion and that's a style that's all about looking extravagant, ironic and inspired by pop culture.

So one would think someone like Nicki Minaj would easily kill this right? Well, not exactly.

Let's take a look into Nicki's fashion archives for a moment.

The rapper came onto the scene like a candy-coated burst of fresh air with her highlighter pink hair and a Barbie necklace.

When Itty Bitty Piggy dropped, her hardcore fan base was established and the rest was history.

As Nicki's fame continued to grow, so did her Camp-like image.

Her entire Pink Friday Roman Reloaded_ phases were centered around Nicki's over-the-top, beyond extra outfits.

We're talking cotton candy pink beehive up-dos, wacky rainbow-colored outfits and everything in between.

She even plays on the Barbie girl trope, calling herself Barbie and her fans Barbz.

We definitely saw this theme prominent in her early days of success, especially on her Pink Friday album cover.

The rapper has walked many red carpets during her career in style.

And she rarely plays it safe.

She's always done what she wants, and that's what we really love about her.

Last year, she stunned on everyone when she arrived on the Met Gala's red carpet.

She confidently graced the red carpet in an Oscar de la Renta blood red gown with a magnificent headpiece I could only ever dream of having the pleasure to wear for a second.

Who better to execute camp than a woman who's been doing it for years on red carpets?

Nicki was definitely one of the stars that was on watch for best dressed Met Gala outfit.

So, naturally fans were excited to see what she put together for the Met Gala.

This is the woman who once wore a pink chicken wing as a necklace, after all.

So it's safe to say expectations were pretty high for the Harajuku Barbie.

But then she stepped onto the pink carpet and the overall reaction was...meh.

Was it Camp? Technically, yes. Was it cute? That's a bit more objective, but sure it was cute to me.

The problem was, coming from Nicki Minaj, the look seemed a little too basic and was kind of disappointing TBH.

This princess gown is definitely one of Nicki's more tame red carpet looks from over the years.

Right away, some fans expressed their confusion about the lack extra-ness in Nicki's dress choice.

"Nicki Minaj been looking like who shot john on carpets for years and decided to turn things down tonight of all nights," wrote one person on Twitter.

Another wrote, "How did Nicki Minaj not get camp right? That is literally her entire image unless she’s not aware she’s doing camp?"

Well, it seems Nicki really didn't know what Camp was, and that's when things got awkward.

In a red carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight, she told reporters that she wasn't really sure if her outfit fit the night's theme.

"Up until today I had no idea what camp was. So, I don't even know if this is camp to be honest."

But wait, there's more.

She later seemed to put the onus on her designer for her underwhelming outfit.

When an E! reporter asked her how she interpreted Camp, the rapper had this to say: "This is by Prabal Gurung, and this is how he interpreted camp, I guess."

She then added, "He established that for me, so the camp stuff, that's on him."

Yikes.

I could be wrong but it sounds like someone wasn't all that crazy about their outfit.

While Nicki hasn't straight up bashed the outfit, people can't help but feel she wasn't happy with it.

People took to social media to comment on Nicki's less than enthusiastic remarks about her dress.

One Twitter user wrote, "Even she’s not happy with the look. Her red carpet interview was dry and telling."

Another Tweeted, "Nicki looked sad in all the interviews I've seen her in. Is she okay?"

What did you think of Nicki's Met Gala look?

I think Nicki still looked pretty cute even though it wasn't the extravagant look I'd usually expect from her.

One fan on Twitter suggested that maybe Nicki's Camp look seems so tame to us because she embodies Camp everyday.

They might be on to something.
