18+ Movie Lines That Fit A Little Too Perfectly In Real Life

mason.zimmer 9 Nov 2018

There are a lot of great movies out there, but it's pretty easy to tell that one holds a special place in your heart when a line from it just comes out in normal conversation.

It doesn't hurt that the best writers can always sum up the situations we get into with a perfect quip. And once that one-liner is in your head, it's pretty much impossible to get it out.

Thanks to these movies, whether the people we're talking to can spot the quote or not, we'll look super clever when the right situation arises.

"She doesn't even go here!" —Mean Girls

YouTube | Movieclips

This one's perfect for when there's drama afoot and somebody who has nothing to do with it tries to butt in like they know what they're talking about.

Unless they immediately tell us that they just have a lot of feelings, they need to stop.

"Help me, I'm poor." —Bridesmaids

YouTube | PictureBox

If there's a better way to convince your friends to take care of you so you don't miss out on the fun, I don't know it. Just don't forget it happened when they need a little fun money too.

Please care about being fair.

"That escalated quickly" —Anchorman

YouTube | WAusJackBauer

Whatever we said to express our disbelief like this before, it's been completely replaced by this classic. When a situation gets intense fast, we can only say it escalated quickly and then we can only think of this line.

Anchorman's got us pegged, what can I say?

"By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me." —The Devil Wears Prada

YouTube | Movieclips

It's nice to bring our rage against slow-walkers down to a sneering simmer so we don't get in trouble, and this line is the perfect way to do that.

We can only hope to match the level of contempt that the acting queen gives off here.

"Maximum effort" —Deadpool

YouTube | TopMovieClips

No matter how little we may want to, sometimes this is the level of effort we have to put in. If anybody can inspire us to say, "fine," and actually try, it's the merc with a mouth himself.

Wait, they don't call him that in the movie. DP? The 'Pool? Whatever.

"Safety first, then teamwork" —Pineapple Express

YouTube | eons11

It's important to get our priorities straight, and it's hard to argue with Saul's little list. We're gonna have a bad time if we ignore the first one and we're not likely to make the dream work if we forget about teamwork.

Saul had our backs with this one.

"Punch it" —Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back

YouTube | tonynibbles

OK, so we probably don't have to "punch it" out of the parking lot most of the time. Still, whoever is riding shotgun always sounds cool when they tell the driver that, so it's all good.

Calling them "Chewie" is optional.

"Perfectly balanced, as all things should be" —Avengers: Infinity War

YouTube | The Cheat

I know it almost seems like a betrayal to quote the destroyer of so many of our favorite superheroes, but it's not our fault he's so weirdly charismatic.

Plus, it only makes it more satisfying to say this when something seems as perfectly balanced as the like/dislike ratio on any video where he says this.

"I could set the building on fire." —Office Space

YouTube | franswiggidy

If you're stuck in a job that makes you mutter this to yourself, don't worry. That can be our little secret. Just don't actually do it. Also, you should probably avoid saying it too loud.

I'm looking out for you, folks.

"You get nothing, you lose. Good day, sir!" —Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

YouTube | Movieclips

That "sir" doesn't do much to make this one sound any less harsh, but desperate times call for desperate measures when somebody just won't understand that they need to hold an L.

Anyone working in retail probably wishes they could say this more often.

"It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for 'em." —Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

YouTube | John Martin

This line was kind of a sleeper in that I don't really recall people saying it at the time, but it has a nice ring to it when you see somebody going for broke.

I don't know, maybe our strategies have just gotten bolder over the years?

"Nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure" —Aliens

YouTube | Nameless Voice

If you haven't had much reason to quote this line, it's because you're lucky enough not to have seen something so mind-shatteringly awful that this legitimately seemed like the only way to be sure.

I envy your zombie-clown–free existence.

"You're killing me, Smalls!" —The Sandlot

YouTube | Facu Verdun

It's pretty difficult to tell a friend they're being too much while still sounding affectionate enough that they don't get defensive or sad, but Ham pulls it off every time.

Pretty much all of the movie's best lines went to this kid, but this one's the clear winner.

"The greater good" —Hot Fuzz

YouTube | LadyAliara

I can personally attest that if you've seen this movie, it's pretty much impossible not to ominously murmur "the greater good" under your breath whenever anybody says this.

It makes impassioned speeches about social change a little more awkward, but at least you get an incredibly funny movie out of the deal.

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means" —The Princess Bride

YouTube | MrJeffooie

It happens to the best of us, but when somebody uses the same wrong word enough to be grating, there's pretty much nothing else to say. It kinda helps that Inigo is so quiet and chill about it, though.

Again, some people can get weirdly defensive about this.

"I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!" —Zoolander

YouTube | Alan Reeves

Oh boy, it gets easier and easier to relate to this one all the time. The more that someone does something obviously wrong and gets away with it, the better we get at imitating Mugatu when we say this.

"T-t-today, Junior" —Billy Madison

YouTube | Ditto Greetings

Hopefully, y'all aren't mean enough to bust this one out when somebody's got a stutter, but it still comes in handy when something is taking way longer than it should. Again, it's one of those lines that's way more relatable than we want it to be.

"Yeah, well. You know, that's just like...your opinion, man." —The Big Lebowski

YouTube | Movieclips

This classic line probably isn't going to win you many arguments, but it's a great way to tell whoever's talking at you that you no longer care about it.

And yes, so is an invitation to go bowling, but I wouldn't get your hopes up on that one.

"Why don't you make like a tree...and get out of here?" —Back to the Future

YouTube | Movieclips

Honestly, I like Biff Tannen's wrong version of this saying a lot better than the way it's actually supposed to go. "Make like a tree and leave" is kind of an eye-rolling pun, but this one is still good for a smile 30 years later.

Load Comments

"Welp, see ya later." —Dumb and Dumber

YouTube | kaje

This one is more about how you say it than what you're actually saying, but it's honestly a pretty good way to leave an awkward conversation that ran out of steam.

Most of the time, it's a pretty bad idea to act like Lloyd Christmas, but this is an exception.

Load Comments

"I say, I resemble that remark" —Space Jam

YouTube | Clips&More4You

OK, Foghorn Leghorn probably isn't the first to express the feeling when somebody hits you with an insult that's actually kind of true. Still, he's probably the first one to put "I say" before it, and that's a pretty necessary part of it, if you ask me.

"Bread makes you fat?" —Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

YouTube | iokcs

The betrayal in Scott Pilgrim's voice when he says this is so real. How can something be so important to our survival, and yet so mean to us?

What hurts more is that they're eating garlic bread in this scene, so it's delicious and betraying us.

Load Comments

"Gretchen, stop trying to make fetch happen. It's not going to happen." —Mean Girls

YouTube | Paramount Movies

Look, I get it. We all want our lingo to catch on, and the next "yeet" or "lit" seems so close to our grasp.

But that's often not how it works, and only someone as mean as Regina George can speak the bitter truth when it doesn't.

"Run away!" —Monty Python and the Holy Grail

YouTube | dkv132

OK, it may not be the most iconic line in this movie, but this will probably come up way more often than "it's only a model" or "she turned me into a newt" or "Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system."

OK, maybe not that one.
